The Langkawi archipelago is a cluster of 99 islands just off the coast of Kedah, close to Perlis and just south of Thailand.

Pulau Langkawi, noted for its legends and beautiful views, is the most developed in the group. It has good beaches, abundant marine life and offers an idyllic retreat from the urban jungle.

A duty-free port, this island of scenic, tranquil landscapes, has become a favorite destination for local and international visitors alike.

Langkawi is accessible by ferry from either Kuala Kedah (75 minutes) or Kuala Perlis (45 minutes).

Ferries usually leave on the hour from 7.00 am to 6.00 pm. Both ferry terminals offer ample parking facilities at just RM5 per day.

There are daily flights to Langkawi from Kuala Lumpur which land at Langkawi International Airport. The entire cluster of islands covers an area of 47,850 hectares and is separated from the mainland by the Straits of Malacca. Of the 99 islands in the group, only Pulau Tuba, Pulau Singa, Pulau Dayang Bunting, and Pulau Langkawi are inhabited.

Mainly a padi-growing and fishing region, Pulau Langkawi's residents have diversified into more commercial and tourism-related activities. The main commercial areas are in the towns of Kuah, Padang Maksirat and Padang Lalang.

The island of Langkawi is steeped in legend and there are some fascinating stories connected to several tourist attractions.

By Road
Drive to Kuala Kedah or Kuala Perlis, the main take-off points by ferry to Langkawi. The journey from Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Kedah takes about six hours while Kuala Perlis is another hour away.
By Air
Malaysia Airlines and budget carrier AirAsia provide direct air services from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) to Langkawi.

There are direct flights to Langkawi from London twice a week.

By Rail
Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM) or Malayan Railway provides economical and comfortable rail services from Kuala Lumpur to Alor Star in Kedah and Arau in Perlis (north of Kedah). From these points, take a taxi or bus Kuala Kedah and Kuala Perlis for your ferry to Langkawi.

By Sea
Express ferries provide regular services daily to Langkawi from both Kuala Kedah and Kuala Perlis. The journey takes about 1 hour 15 minutes and 45 minutes respectively. From Penang to Langkawi the ferry takes about 2 hours 30 minutes. The island is also a stopover for Star Cruises, one of the largest luxury cruise lines in the world.

A number of diving operators can be found either located within a hotel or at dive centres around Pulau Langkawi. Most diving is done around Pulau Payar Marine Park Group of islands.

Strict conservation laws enforced by Marine Park Rangers around the island have resulted in prolific marine life.

A unique highlight in Pulau Payar is the presence of up to 20 juvenile black tip sharks providing excitement to the many snorkellers who visit the Marine Park centre.

Although at times the plankton-rich waters can reduce visibility, the abundance of fish makes up for it. Fusiliers, jacks, black tip sharks, barracudas and groupers are sighted on a regular basis. Coral life is a mixture of hard and soft corals. Pulau Kaca is a favourite for easy, shallow wreck diving, with dozens of sunken fishing trawlers providing refuge for a variety of marine animals. The Pulau Payar groups of island offer the best diving along the west coast.

To the north of the lake is Gua Langsir (Cave of the Banshee) which is reputedly haunted. The belief may have come about because of the noises made by thousands of bats which live in the interior of the 91m-high cave.

Langkawi is truly alive with references to legends. Without going into the colourful details of these many legends, here is an indication of how legendary references still suffuse life in Langkawi to this day:
Where the engagement ring was flung became known as 'Tanjung Cincin' or Cape of the Ring; the broken crockery became the village of 'Belanga Pecah' (Broken Crockery); the spilled gravy became 'Kuah' or gravy; Kisap or 'to seep in' became the name of the village where the gravy seeped through the land; and the Hot Springs at Air Hangat is apparently the spot where the cauldron of hot water was broken. Two giants who were turned into the mountain stone gave rise to Gunung Mat Cincang and Gunung Mat Raya, and Mat Sawar who tried to mediate between them was transformed into the hill which now separates the two mountains.

Beaches: Pantai Cenang

Only 3 km from the Langkawi International Airport and about 25 km south-west of Kuah is the famous beach of Pantai Cenang where most of the beach chalets and resorts are located. It is a lively beach with a number of restaurants and bars offering good food and drinks. There are facilities for sailing, canoeing, snorkeling and fishing. You can also hire boats for island-hopping there.
Opposite Pantai Cenang is the island of Pulau Rebak. At low tide, a sandbar allows visitors to walk to Pulau Rebak and view marine life caught in the tidal pools. Not far off is another island worth exploring called Pulau Tepor, which can be reached by a hired boat from Cenang Beach.

Beaches: Pantai Tengah

At the southern end of Pantai Cenang is another stretch of quieter beach known as Pantai Tengah which curves past a rocky point. There is less development here, but like Pantai Cenang, there are sailboats, catamarans and canoes for hire. Nearby is the Langkawi Golf Club, an 18-hole golf course which fronts the beach.

Beaches: Tanjung Rhu

At Padang Lalang there's a roundabout with a turn-off to the north to Tanjung Rhu. The beach is lined with whispering casuarinas trees and has a pleasant, relaxed feel. Tanjung Rhu has one of Langkawi's best beaches. The shallow water makes it fine for swimming, and a sandbank links it to a nearby rocky outcrop. The Gua Cerita, or Cave of Legends, is just around a promontory and can be reached by boats that are hired on the beach

Teluk Datai to the north-west of the island is way off the main road, but it has the most exclusive golf course on the island. There is a beach near the resort meant mainly for resort guests. There are several jungle trails that take you down to the sea. There is a crocodile farm on the way to Teluk Datai where visitors can view the crocodiles and be entertained by shows in the mornings and afternoons

Some 2 km west of Tanjung Rhu is Pantai Pasir Hitam, a beach streaked with black sand. The black streaks are caused by the deposits of mineral oxides from a nearby spring. The sea in the area is dotted with large boulders. Along the beach is a jetty where fishing boats moor. Attractions include food and souvenir stalls that sell local crafts and trinkets.

Islands: Coral Garden

Coral garden is located on the western tip of Pulau Payar. This dive site features both hard and soft corals along the island's rocky terrain with depths from 5 to 15 metres. Huge boulders carpeted with dendronephythya soft corals offer numerous crevices that attract marine life seeking refuge from predators. Fish life is abundant, with damsels, fusiliers, lionfish, schooling jack and occasional huge groupers.

Islands: Grouper Farm

Suitably named, this dive site located towards the Southern end of Pulau Payar is home to small schooling fish nervously darting about due to the presence of numerous groupers. Hard corals dominate the seascape with the reef top gradually sloping down to about 15 meters to the sandy bottom. If a slight current is present, a drift dive is the best approach to this site, but watch out for spiny sea urchins.

Islands: Pulau Payar

Pulau Payar is located 30 km south east of Langkawi and north of Penang Island.

This marine park extends over a number of islands with Pulau Payar being the largest. It takes an hour to get there from the Kuah Jetty by speedboat. There is a floating platform moored off Pulau Payar which has a restaurant and underwater observation chamber to view the marine life surrounding a reef. It is a good area for snorkelling or taking rides in glass-bottomed boats.

No form of accommodation is available on the island, only the Marine Park centre occupies its solitary beach. The best diving is to be found from the Western tip to the Southern and Eastern portion of Pulau Payar.

Islands: Pulau Segantang

This twin rocky outcrop is located 13 kilometres towards the west of Pulau Payar. Pulau Segantang features steep rocky terrain plunging into the sea to a sandy bottom at 20 metres. Nurse sharks, barracudas and jacks are very common here. Fusiliers will swim curiously around intruding divers. Here, hard corals and sea fans are found on the slopes between 15 to 20 metres. Lobsters, moray eels and mollusks are also commonly observed.

Islands: Pulau Kaca

Situated towards the east of Pulau Payar is some easy wreck diving off Pulau Kaca. Dozens of sunken fishing trawlers are found around Pulau Kaca creating artificial reefs. Rocky topside topography gives way to hard coral growth at 5 metres and slopes to a sandy bottom at about 18 metres.

A diver does not require any bearings to locate the wrecks, as he is bound to encounter the scattered vessels in almost any direction.

Coral blocks on the sandy bottom are inhabited by abundant small reef fishes, mollusks and nudibranchs. Try to maintain good buoyancy, as the sandy seabed is littered with sea urchins.
